Usually I stay away from Chinese talk shows because the music drives me crazy but the cast of The Four was so cute that I wanted to post some highlights. The four boys playing the titular characters showed up as well as Gui Gui (who played Dan Niang in Lu Zhen) Recap and Pictures below.
For those who are unfamiliar with the show, there are five hosts and usually whoever is hocking their drama comes to do some dancing, games, and small talk. The hosts are pretty funny and while I don’t usually watch it, there are times, like today that I actually want to share a good episode. Some parts were just boring so I left it out. Enjoy!
So Happy Camp (yes I realize how the name is practically perfect for the show, I’m sure they didn’t intentionally name it camp, but it’s a pretty campy show.) requires all its stars to start out with a little dance. Zhang Han and Mao Zi Jun strut out with Janine Chang and it’s a cute little ditty with Zhan Han skipping on the stage.
Then the mood changes and Chen Wei Ting, Yang Yang with Gui Gui comes out doing Ke$ha’s Princess song, and it’s sexy and fun.
They all introduce themselves.

The hosts beg Chen Wei Ting to show off some of his dance moves and he’s pretty good. One of the hosts remarks that some karaoke places allows you to dance and one time he was there for two hours watching others dance, he got tired and nearly fell asleep.
They introduce Yang yang.
They tease Yang Yang (who played Bao Yu in the Dreams of Red Chamber in 2010) about his clothes, did he make those or did his mom make them? It’s a pretty horrendous ensemble and they rightly make fun of him.
Wu Ying Ji introduces herself and her nickname is Gui Gui (which means little ghost). She’s as cute as can be and is really in demand, especially after the “we got married” show she did with Tacyeon and Legend of Lu Zhen where she played Dan Niang
Janine Chan is pretty, I have no interest in her.
Zhan Han introduces himself and one of the hosts, named Hai Tao, pipes up that they did a drama together. The other hosts pounce on the Hai Tao, saying “Is that the one where you played the eunuch?” Hai tao gets really frustrated and asks Zhang Han to clear his name. Zhang Han says that he didn’t really know how to act with Hai Tao, because if he acted really seriously it would make Hai Tao look bad (Hai Tao usually plays comic relief) but if he didn’t then it would make the production bad. Also Zhang Han was afraid that he wouldn’t stop laughing. Hai Tao wonders if that’s why the entire time he was acting Zhang Hai didn’t show up and they had to use a body double for Zhang Han.
Mao Zi Jun gets introduced and they talk about Heng Dian (a large palace complex especially built for period dramas) Apparently Heng Dian is nicknamed Hollywood of the East, and it’s so nice in there that actors don’t really want to leave. Wu Ying Jie nods enthusicastically when they talk about how awesome it is in there. They joke that some actors feel like they’ve lost everything once they’ve returned to earth from Heng Dian. They joke that 1 day in Heng Dian is better than 1,000 years on earth. One host, when he went there, was even greeted with “welcome to Heng Dian, a World Class Capital”.
The hosts sets a scenario for them, asking them, if they are going to go on a group vacation, what could they offer to the group? Chen Wei Ting Says that he could be a body guard because he’s into boxing (I knew I liked you when I saw you)
They ask Yang Yang what he could offer and he looks at them blankly for a second and says, I can be a table.
Everyone asks what does he mean and he says that if they take him , they won’t need a table, he can become one in a second. They ask him to demonstrated and the boy starts stretching like crazy. Sure enough he bends over backwards and they all begin to put microphones on his belly. It’s pretty impressive.
Janine Chang says that she always has medicine with her so she’s good to take on a vacation. They ask Zhang Han what he’s good at and he says that everyone use to call him class president, because he plans everything. So if they take him, they don’t have to worry about anything.
Gui Gui is also like Zhang Han, but she’s even more type A and they ask her how she plans and she says well, “You wake up, wash your face, have breakfast, go to the bathroom” they ask what happens if she doesn’t want to go to the bathroom? She says that it’s not going to happen. Apparently one time, gui gui went out with her friends and they all wouldn’t speak to her after a day because she planned/packed everything really tightly.
They ask Mao Zhi Jun and he says that he’s good at enjoying a vacation. He thinks that vacations should be seven days, if it’s not seven or longer than it’s not a vacation. They ask him then what does six and a half days count as… a business trip? He replies that its just a relaxing walk. They tease him about him not caring for other numbers’ feelings.
Chen Wei Ting shows off his boxing skills with Yang Yang as his partner. As Wei Ting hits Yang yang (his wall), Yang Yang starts hitting back it just turns hilarious.
They split into teams for the oncoming games portion of the show. The teams are Zhang Han, Janine Chang, and Mao Zi Jun and a couple of the hosts. The other team includes Gui Gui, Chen Wei Ting and Yang Yang. Zhang Han drily observes that their teams is better, they have him as the planner, Mao Zi Jun to give the money to enjoy the vacation, and Janine to provide medical care. As for the other team, if they go on vacation it’ll be super stressful. Gui Gui will plan everything down to the number of bathroom trips while others are busy being tables and working out.
They do a suitcase pushing contest where people sit on a suitcase and try to make it into a circle. No one wins but Zhang Han hilariously tries to edge his way into the ring by gyrating his hips (nope, I wrote that right).
For the next segment they decided to do science experiment, and the hosts start off by asking the guests what was their coldest experience. Gui Gui tells them that when she was shooting “We Got Married World Edition” it was snowing and they were wearing wedding clothes. That was the episodes where she said Nickkun was her favorite and Taceyeon (her on screen husband in the reality show) got really really jealous. She was so cold and Taceyeon took off his jacket and wrapped it around her. Go watch it, it’s really cute.
They ask Zhang Han, and he tells them with that his coldest memory was when he fell off a mountain a few days ago. They are stunned until he stoically asks them if that was “cold” enough. (Chinese people sometimes tell awkward jokes termed Cold Jokes, where there is a moment of stunned silence and then realization that joke was so awkward.) They say that his joke was really cold. (he played a really bad play on words.)
So those where some of the highlights. The rest of the show was okay but I wanted to showcase some of the actor’s personalities. The games got a bit too much after a while and so when I realized that there weren’t any more funny bits, I stopped.
Thoughts: I love the interactions between the hosts and the cast. Zhang Han is definitely the silent and strong type, but he does have some really funny times and he’s the type to keep funny things to himself. As for the rest of the cast, they were adorable, but not of them really stood out as amazingly funny. Gui Gui was adorable and makes me want to watch her and Taceyon again. Raw version is up on Youtube
Also – here are some pretty pictures of the actors in their costumes for the drama.

And because they are pretty, I had to do a modern shot too.
