The bad thing about keeping a secret from someone you love is that no matter what happens, you have to keep making more lies. Or worse, the communication between two people utterly fails. Gao Zhan experiences this first hand.
The Royal Concubine orders Lu Zhen to be beheaded. The Emperor, huffing weakly, comes out as they are dragging Lu Zhen and tells the Royal Concubine that if she is going to kill Lu Zhen, the she will have to kill him as well, and places the sword on his own neck. She throws the sword in disgust and the Emperor goes to Lu Zhen, telling her to go back, that everything is alright.
Lu Zhen runs back to the Treasury in tears at the treatment.
Meanwhile, the Dowager is delighted that the Emperor and the Royal Concubine has had such a row over Lu Zhen, and that finally someone can get between them. Apparently, the Royal Concubine felt really bad she caused the Emperor to be ill and tried to meet him, only to be refused, the first time this has ever occured. She tells Lou Qing Qiang to bring Lu Zhen some medicine and that the Dowager will protect Lu Zhen. Lou Qing Qiang advises Lu Zhen to act as if nothing has happened, otherwise, the Royal Concubine is too powerful for her to fight now.
That night, Gao Zhan sends over a box of medicine as well, with the yellow flower. She cries, touched.
The emperor is feeling weak and drinking by himself. He reassures Gao Zhan that besides the head wound, Lu Zhen is okay. The Emperor sighs and says that when he talked to Lu Zhen, every word she said about Gao Zhan was filled with happiness. Why can’t he and the Royal Concubine be like that as well?
The Royal Concubine is frustrated and can’t seem to understand why she got so jealous.
Wang Shang Yi tells her to offer back the Empress Seal in an act of contrition, saying someone else must be worthier of the seal. This brings the Emperor running to her door and they make up.
Ling Long and Ling Lang discuss the events that occured between Lu Zhen , the Royal Concubine and the Emperor. They’re awed and horrified by Lu Zhen’s actions. Lu Zhen comes and asks how the preparation is going. Turns out that there is a huge ceremony called Sacraficing to the heavens in which the Emperor and his Empress will ask the heavens to bless the kingdom.
All the Lady Officials are called to meet with the Royal Concubine and the Dowager. The Dowager is enraged that the Royal Concubine is going to take her place and act as the Empress in the ceremony. It is usually reserved for the Dowager, also the position is usually given to the highest ranking woman of the harem. The Royal Concubine smirks and tells her that she, the Royal Concubine is was also a Former Princess, while Dowager came from a lowly background, also the Dowager’s reign ended with the Old Emperor’s death. The Dowager is enraged to wordlessness as the Royal Concubine proudly excuses her self, winning this round.
Later, the Dowager orders that the Treasury bring her the Empress Crown, which will signify to the ministers who the true Empress and number 1 of the harem is. The royal concubine does the same, leaving Lu Zhen in a perilous positions. She tells Ling Long that if she doesn’t give this crown to the Dowager, she’ll be punished, if she doesn’t give it to the Royal Concubine, she’ll most likely die as well.
When the Royal Concubine’s maids asks for the Empress Crown, Lu Zhen tells her that it needs to be cleaned and will give it later.
Lu Zhen remembers that there is a Pheonix Crown used by a former Empress from another Dynasty. The Empress was an amazing woman, many ministers had known her and knew of her talents. Lu Zhen brings the Phoenix Crown to the Dowager, who, after comparing the Empress Crown and the Phoenix Crown chooses the latter.
Lu Zhen is also officially introduced to the Dowager, who looks upon her favorably, telling her to come to the Dais and calling her prettier than that Royal Concubine.
On the day of the ceremony, the Emperor and the Royal Concubine conduct the ceremony, the Royal Concubine having a very self satisfied expression.
Later the Royal Concubine plots with Wang Shang Yi on how to get rid of Lu Zhen for good. The New year is coming up and she’ll make sure that Lu Zhen has so much to do that she’ll make mistakes and the Royal Concubine will pounce.
That night Lu Zhen is happily waiting for Gao Zhan. He runs in and asks her if anything has happened? Has any concubines given her trouble? Lu Zhen asks if he knows about the Royal Concubine and he has to admit that he knows she’s the one that cause the Royal Concubine the embaressment today . Lu Zhen’s eyes flash and tells him that she had to do what she had to do, it was the Royal Concubine that backed her into a corner. But no worries the Dowager will protect them…
Gao Zhan grabs Lu Zhen’s arm and forbids her to get any closer to the Dowager. Lu Zhen is equally angry and asks why? Yes, the Dowager is bad, but at least she doesn’t try to kill Lu Zhen.
Gao Zhan tells her that the Dowager is a thousand times worse than the Royal Concubine. But Lu Zhen cuts him off, she knows that he knows that Wang Shang Yi has tried hard to get rid of her. Gao Zhan tries to explain and fails, both of them shouting now.
Yuan Lu and Dan Niang are outside. Dan Niang is worried at how angry they seem with each other but Yuan Lu tells her that this is what couples in love do. They fight. If they don’t fight, then they’re in trouble. Dan Niang replies that she doesn’t understand. And Yuan Lu explains using food. If Dan Niang likes some food, she’ll eat it, and savor it, right? Well, if she didn’t she’ll put it aside right now? Dan Niang gets it and says that since she like Yuan Lu, she’ll have to keep beating him up?
They are interrupted with the sound of breaking dishes. Lu Zhen tells Gao Zhan that if he has a temper, he can go and give someone else what for. Gao Zhan leaves, exasperated. And Lu Zhen sits down to have a good cry.
At times, this show is about Lu Zhen jumping from one snake pit into another. The Royal Concubine was never one of my favorite nemesis to begin with but she does make me feel uneasy for Lu Zhen, whereas I only felt annoyance and pity for Shen Bi. So in that respect I like her a lot more as a character. As for the fights, I’m in agreement with some of the readers’ comments about how realistic these actors can be. They can get into it, and it makes the conflict more believable. Let me know what you think!
