The story progresses predictably like the ticking of the relentless clock. However, YSY made the story come alive in the midst of the ongoing exposition as always seen in the first two episodes. This drama tends to rely on physical gags instead of verbal humor, so in some ways it was made for YSY because that boy can fill a room with just his quirky mannerisms.
After winning the noodle competition , Zhang Jian is told by his mother Wu Ren Mei, who is also the vice chairwoman of the Hang Zhou noodle conglomeration, that he needs to go and start from the bottom. He would gain more respect, and even though he is the only heir to the company, he mustn’t be complacent. Zhang Jian is unwilling, saying that he’s had enough of her controlling nature. He’s no longer 3, so she needs to stop moving his life around. Wen Ren Mei calls him by another name, Jiang Hu Zhen. She reminds he that she was the one who took him to China, to give him the good life. He screams that name is in the past, and to never call him by it. He will live his life on his own terms and storms out.
Ling Ling and Grandpa are at his house and he asks her to do a favor. He wants her to offer the Korean boy who pretended to be the Japanese Contestant to come and work for Hang Zhou Noodles. Ling Ling looks at him in disbelief telling him that only the first place winner should be allowed in the Noodle House, and grandpa tells her that he finds the Korean boy to be very interesting. Ling Ling noddes and goes to him Jiang Xiu Cai
Zhang Jian happens to overhear the conversation and it slightly shakes his reserve to do what he wants. Ling Ling leaves and Zhang Jian comes to see Grandpa.
He wants to know what Grandpa thought of his noodle dish. Grandpa answers that it was very fitting for the heir of this resturant. Zhang Jian hears the second meaning and asks that if the noodles he made was fitting for the resturant itself. Grandpa tells him that his dish was smooth and polished and professional, but it lacked heart and passion. The reason that so many people would choose to eat their noodles instead of a hundred other dishes is because Hang Zhou noodles has that crucial ingredient. Grandpa sighs and says that he would probably be a better grandpa had Zhang Jian not gotten into the noodle business. Zhang Jian replies that it’s because it’s the noodle business that Grandpa was so strict on him.
Our hero, is currently stuffing his face with a bowl of noodles in a state of morose dispair. He has very little money and feels like he’s failed his mom by not being able to find a way to stay in Hang Zhou.
He sighs and takes out a fencing medal that his father had given his mother before he had disapeared from their lives.
He looks out of the window and accidentally knocks his noodles onto a girl on the ground floor, who turns out to be Ling Ling.
Ling Ling runs up to his room and starts yelling at him as he grabs her towels.
Finally Jiang Xiu Cai has had enough and starts yelling at her back, saying it was her fault that he got injured and couldn’t knead the dough. He’s never met such a wierd girl with such wierd looking features as Ling Ling.
Ling Ling is surpreme pissed off and is about to huff out when Jiang XIu Cai grabs her arm and asks what she came for. She told him that she’s not going to tell him. And to make her forgive him. He busts out a pair of ceramic bunnies and starts reinacting their fight and asking for forgiveness through them.
She looks at him as if he was demented and he asks if they’re doing anything for her. She shakes her head and he does a puppy glower that has her smiling at his cuteness – Yes, so was the rest of the people who watch this drama.
She tells him that he’s been accepted at the Noodle House and he starts doing a happy dance of disbelief. He jumps up and down and makes his bunnies kiss, she can’t help but laugh at his childishness.
Meanwhile, Wu Ren Mei is reminiscing about the past, the year was 1987. She had been a Chinese korean interpreter who had a crush on Zhang Lin (the dad). They were at a fencing championship which he had won. She goes to try and ask him out only to see him hug his girlfriend and her friend, En Ying.
Wu Ren Mei is not happy at this turn of events, and she has this careless evilness mixed with jealousy that makes her the most dangerous of adversaries. They later both have kids. En Ying names her baby Hu Shui ( which mean lake) because Zhang Lin’s home town as the West Lake. Wu Ren Mei, hearing the name, decides to name her child Hu Zhen (who is now Zhang Jian).
Zhang Jian wakes up screaming that he’s Zhang Jian and it’s clear that Wu Ren Mei’s words had rattled him pretty badily. He decides to take his mother’s advice. Elsewhere Ling Ling is in bed and she takes out a necklace and there’s a picture of her and Zhang Jian on her laptop – it’s pretty clear that she’s got a crush on him.
The next day, Jiang Xiu Cai takes his bike to work and meets Zhang Jian in his Mercedes convertible. Jiang Xiu Cai arrives first and rubs it in.
He tries to make friends with Zhang Jian only to be left hanging when he goes for a hand shake.
Jiang Xiu Cai sees the other chefs and is surprise they are out there to greet him. They also ignore his handshake.
It’s pretty clear that they were waiting for Zhang Jian and sticks to him like glue, fawning over him and complementing him.
Ling Ling takes Jiang Xiu Cai to the storage to change, there’s not space for him in the changing room.
He comes out in anger and shows her that they’ve given him a girl’s top, not only does it not fit. It’s ripped.
She says its because he was so suddenly added that they haven’t had time to make his clothes. Jiang Xiu Cai looks in horror but Ling Ling is able to find another shirt for him, it smells terrible but one look from her and he’s contrite.
Problem is, he can’t actually get the shirt off because of his arms. Ling Ling mutters that for a guy so big, he sure is useless. He asks her to pull it off and she nearly dislocates his shoulder. He grabs her hips and tell to to pull gently.
She gives a cold lecture about propriety to Ling Ling who isn’t given the opportunity to explain what had happened. Wu Ren Mei tells Jiang Xiu Cai that he certain was amazing at the competition (sarcastically) and it flies over his head completely. He tells her thanks and that if his arm had been better, he would have made really tasty noodles. She scoffs and tell him not to lose face for the noodle shop.
Thoughts – It’s hard to piss off someone who refuses to be pissed off. In this case Jiang Xiu Cai is one very lucky man. Things go over his head and he doesn’t take insults too seriously. He and Ling Ling are developing a natural rapport and she finds it hard not to smile in his presence. I truely believe that Yoon Shi Yoon is carrying this drama by himself, because the story is trite and done many times. I took so many pictures of YSY that I couldn’t be bothers with others. I’ve tried to insert as many as possible here.
